Food Banks

I continue to support our local Food Bank

  • very aware of and concerned at the impact of the cost of living crisis

  • praise to those who donate and offer their time to support people in need in the community

  • with my own donations to a food bank

  • seeking to build a fair society where there is no need for these to exist.

Multicultural Group, Brighton & Hove

I am a founder member of this initiative to promote diversity, equality, inclusion and social cohesion

  • enhancing multicultural involvement through BAME events and hospitality

  • I currently serve as Chair.

Brighton Open Market CIC

Trading in a unit since the opening of the new Open Market on London Road in 2014

  • served terms as a Trustee Director, representing the Traders at Board meetings, ensuring traders views were heard and had input into the running of the market.

  • took the lead role in arranging a successful, all-inclusive, Eid cultural event highlighting the celebrations at the end of Ramadan.

Through the Covid epidemic I have worked with multiple agencies

  • provided nearly 300 meals to front line workers in NHS, Ambulance Service, Police from my restaurant

  • helped coordinate support to people out of touch with services

  • campaigned to ensure vaccinations were available free of charge to people such as refugees whose immigration status had yet to be finalised.

Covid-19

I am involved in various Advisory and Scrutiny roles including

  • Police Engagement Group, Brighton

  • Independent Advisory Group, Executive Committee Member

  • Sussex Police Headquarters Race Advisory Group - BAME non-discriminatory practices, encourage diversity in enrolment

  • Interpreting - offering interpreting service for those who need assistance with the English language in official, legal situations.

Community member of this Council Group, part of the city's Anti-Racist Pledge

  • helping to shape strategies to tackle racism and inequality.

Community Action Group, Brighton & Hove City Council

Concerned with countering hate crime, harassment of and discrimination towards ethnic minorities and promoting fairness and inclusion.

  • I served as Secretary and Vice Chair of this forum.

I was deeply involved in all aspects of this not for profit initiative to create and sustain a resource

  • to champion the BAME community and families in Brighton & Hove

  • to promote community cohesion through understanding and appreciation of each others' cultures

  • I served as a Trustee Director, 2013 - 2017.

Black & Minority Ethnic Community Partnership

Involved in Youth Work with a mix of children with different ethnic backgrounds, setting up scheme

  • out of school leisure and sports activities, including football coaching.
